Artist Statement

No words are necessary. These sculptures are meant to speak to the viewer. Some are whimsical, others are more serious.  Facial expressions, the tilt of the head, the position of the shoulders, arms, legs and even the fingers and toes tell part of a story. In one piece, the narrative might be quite obvious; in another, it may be ambiguous. The sculptures are always thought-provoking. A viewer can pause for a moment in order to connect with a voiceless image. The figures have no secrets. They are often naked and vulnerable. Not even a glaze covers their bodies, yet they “speak” out loud.

I play with the proportions of the figures, hoping to enhance their meaning and further shape the viewer’s reactions. Each piece has an especially personal narrative for me, but the viewers will find meanings of their own.

Some of these sculptures were carefully planned with preparatory studies. Others were spontaneous reactions to the clay’s nature, its smooth texture and malleability. As the clay passes through my hands, it assumes a form that my energy animates into an image that I continue to ply and to refine. I sometimes think of my work as drawing with clay. I experiment with its responsive nature,  but respect its limitations. There is always something new to learn about this ancient medium that the earth gives us.
